Alright so your book is a movie

All too often a good book is made into a mediocre (at best) movie and people see the movie because of the “two hours, no reading, took a nap” philosophy.  I like to read the book before seeing the movie because apparently I’m a glutton for punishment.  But this section captures my reviews on books that have been made into films and occasionally I’ll add a review of the film as well.  So far in my life I have found only two movies that did their respective books justice: Fight Club and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.

·         Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
·         One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey
·         The Help by Kathyrn Stockett
·         Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
·         The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Series by Steig Larson

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
To even write a review for this book seems crazy to me because all I want to write over and over again is “read this book, read this book, read this book...now...quit reading this damn blog and start the book”. But considering that is probably not going to inspire you to read the book (and it may make you think I'm wearing my crazy pants) here's a quick review because it’s hard to say anything without it being a spoiler.  Chuck Palahniuk introduces us to his main character who is basically a pathetic-single-American-work obsessed-man living in a well furnished  apartment with a serious sleeping disorder.  His life is boring, he hates his job and he has to fake having terminal illnesses at support groups to get any real interaction with people.  That is until he meets Tyler Durden.  Tyler Durden is everything our main character is not and yet they form an unlikely friendship that will change the way you think and might even convince you to join a fight club – just get out some of that bent up anger.  I’d tell you more but the first rule of fight club is don’t talk about fight club and quite frankly I think I may have said too much already.  Read this book and then read it again because you definitely missed some things the first time around.

Note: This is not ChickLit. So so very much so not ChickLit so if that’s what you’re looking for best peruse a different post.

The movie: Well it’s hard to go wrong with Brad Pitt especially if you are going to combined him with Ed Norton.  It’s no secret that Fight Club is a great movie, it has a cult following and has made some serious dough.  All in all it stayed true to the book but occasionally lost some of the real grittiness that you can get away with in the written word but is often too disturbing to actually hear out loud.  This is for sure one of my favorite movies of all time so what can I say book or movie it’s a total win win.
